Quilting Class - MAY 14th!

Join Melissa Allen from Graham Hill Studios at North Country Quilters in Rumney, New Hampshire for a quilting class.   The class is being held on Saturday, May 14th, 2016.    In this class, you’ll be making a quilt called, “Lucky Stars” by Atkinson Designs in a lap size (see below).  A light breakfast, coffee, and lunch will be provided.  Maximum participants: 12

The class schedule is as follows:

9:00 - 9:30 Arrival, set-up, and light breakfast

9:30-12:00 Introductions and review of general pattern instructions, cutting

12:00-1:00 Lunch hour with sewing machine demonstrations by Steve Vanasse

1:00- 3:30 Sewing, squaring up, sewing the top together

3:30 - 4:00 Take - down

Please arrive to class on time to be courteous to other students.  Label all materials with a permanent marker.  Bring an extension cord, power strip, cutting mat, rotary cutter, sewing machine (remember your foot pedal), sewing machine instruction book, and any notions you may need (thread, fabric, etc.)  If you have any questions, please call Melissa Allen directly at 523-7996

Cancellations:  In the event you are unable to attend the class, please notify North Country Quilters by May 7th  for store credit.  You can, however, find someone to take your place (please notify instructor).  If we cancel the class, a full refund will be given. Refunds will not be given to no-shows.

Crazy as a Bird Dog - October 18th

Join Melissa Allen from Graham Hill Studios in conjunction with Mascoma Valley Parks and Recreation for a quilting class in Canaan on the beautiful Cardigan Mountain School Campus at Cardigan Commons dining facility.  The class is being held on Sunday, October  18, 2015.  In this class, you’ll be making a quilt called, “Crazy as a Bird Dog” by Janet Nesbitt and Pam Soliday of Buggy Barn Quilt Company.  You will learn how to make the pieced dogs and pieced flowers. Brunch and coffee will be provided.  Maximum participants: 12

The class schedule is as follows:

8:30 - 9:00 Arrival and setting up

9:00-10:00 Introductions and review of general pattern instructions, tracing, cutting

10:00-10:30 Brunch

12:30 - 3:30 Sewing, squaring up

3:30 - 4:00 Take - down

I might be crazy to start aother quilt on the eve of the first day of school, but I just have to have a project to look forward to in the evenings!

Tag Shopping

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to clean my husband's family's vacation home (I like to clean). My daughter, Larkin, was my partner in cleaning grime! While making up the beds in preparation for guests, Lark and I came across an antique quilt on one of the beds. Now, I'm sure it's been there for years, but when I saw this quilt, I was amazed! It's a simple nine patch with sashing, but the handwork is very nice. I immediately wanted to know who made the quilt. There wasn't a label.

I've been known to give quits to family and friends and up until recently, I did not label my quilts. When I decided to open Graham Hill Studios, I realized I needed an emblem.

I designed an emblem (with my husband's help) for the website and any paperwork that is associated with the business side of things. Then, I had t-shirts made (so we'd all look put together for the farmers' market). I then went all crazy and had TAGS made for my handmade items. Here they are:

These tags were made by Top Stitch Embroidery in Lebanon, New Hampshire. I provided the fabric and they provided the sik screen. They left some space so I could stitch the tag into my quilts. Here's an example:

Thinking back to that quilt at the vacation home, I wondered a few things:

1. How old is the quilt?

2. Who made it?

3. Who was it made for?

So then, I made sure that I answered those questions on the back of my tag:

So, in 100 years or so, when you're cleaning your family's vacation home (and love it) and you come across this quilt, be sure to look for the tag and know that the person who made it wanted you to know it was made for someone special, for a special reason, by a special someone who loves that person very much!
